Chief Minister Sarma expressed his excitement about this development, stating that it marks a significant milestone in the history of Assam. He shared this news on X, formerly known as Twitter, using the hashtags “Jai Maa Bharati” and “Jai Maa Asom.”
The notification, signed by President Droupadi Murmu, specified that August 16, 2023, is the date on which the Election Commission’s orders related to the delimitation of constituencies in Assam will come into effect. Congress party expressed its criticism of the ruling BJP party
However, the opposition Congress party expressed its criticism of the ruling BJP party, which governs both the northeastern state and the central government. The Congress accused the BJP of exercising “brute authoritarianism” in the way the Election Commission rushed through the delimitation process in Assam. They pointed out that this occurred despite ongoing concerns raised by the Supreme Court on the matter.
Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, the son of the late former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, commented on X that the speed at which the Election Commission proceeded with the delimitation process, despite the Supreme Court’s questions, is another example of the BJP’s authoritarian tendencies. He also mentioned that the BJP aims to exclude the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the selection process of Election Commissioners in a new bill.

In summary, President Droupadi Murmu’s approval of the delimitation of constituencies in Assam has been acknowledged by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while the opposition Congress party has criticized the BJP for rushing the process and questioned the party’s approach to democratic governance.
