ODI World Cup 2023: The Australia team suffered another blow as both Steve Smith and Mitchell Strac has been ruled out of the South Africa series. The batsman and bowler duo have suffered major injuries and will miss the Proteas tour.
This news piles over the fact that Pat Cummins was already ruled out of the series. The red ball captain suffered a fractured wrist. Cricket Australia confirmed the news of these two also missing the South Africa series because of injury.
The board is hopeful that all three of these players will be able to make their return by the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. While Pat Cummins is confirmed to be out for four weeks, the timeline of these two has not been determined yet.
Major Injuries To Starc and Smith
Steve Smith is one of the few all-format players. He was supposed to open the innings in the T20s after his brilliant performances in BBL. But those plans will be halted now that he is injured.
It was revealed on Friday that Smith was suffering from a tendon injury. It is not clear how long Smith has been batting from this injury. But few reports state that he was getting treated before the fourth Ashes 2023 match.
Whereas Mitchell Starc is suffering from ‘Groin Soreness.’ His shoulder injury has been healed and is nothing to be worried about. He will be out for the South Africa tour and can make his return against India in three-match series right before World Cup.
New Captain Before ODI World Cup 2023
Mitch Marsh will take over the captaincy for both formats of white ball cricket. He will lead the team against South Africa. Cummins will join the team in the later stages of the South Africa tour.
Meanwhile, Smith and Starc will join the team in the India series and Warm Up matches. Marnus Labushagne has been called up again after Smith’s departure. Meanwhile, Spencer Johnson will join the Aussies in Starc’s place.
