Delhi Commission for Women: The Delhi Commission for Women has ensured admission of an acid attack survivor in a College in a leading university in Delhi. On 14.12.2022, a 17-year-old girl in Dwarka area of Delhi was going to school when two bike riders threw acid over her. In this regard an FIR was registered, and the girl remained admitted in the hospital for treatment of injuries caused due to the acid attack. Three persons were arrested by the Delhi Police in the matter.
Survivor’s Resilience Shines Through Amidst Tragedy
The Commission visited the girl and has been in touch with the family to support the girl. The girl is an excellent student, and she did not let the attack on her come in the way for her studies. She worked hard and passed all her exams. Recently, the Commission received a complaint from the survivor regarding her admission in a leading university in Delhi. The girl submitted that she had been selected for admission in a coveted program in a college affiliated with a leading university of Delhi. She however informed that her admission in the college had been cancelled as she could not present her EWS certificate on time. She informed the Commission that by the time she managed to receive her EWS certificate, the college denied her admission citing the procedural lapse that she was not able to submit her EWS certificate in time.
Acid Attack Survivor’s Triumph in Education
The girl has been subjected to a heinous crime of acid attack only recently and still, she managed to overcome her grave trauma and clear the competitive examination for getting admission in a college in one of the leading universities in Delhi. The Commission therefore issued a notice to the college demanding that the girl be urgently admitted therein. However, the college informed the Commission that only the university can help the girl in the matter. DCW Chief Swati Maliwal issued summons to the registrar of the university on 26th August 2023 for appearance before the Commission on 29th August 2023, and sought an action taken report in the matter. Senior representatives from the university visited the Commission on 29.08.2023 and informed that on the request of the Commission, the university has decided to take a lenient view on the issue and that the girl has been granted admission in the same program and college she had applied for.
Acid Attack Survivor’s Admission Triumph
DCW Chief Ms. Swati Maliwal stated, “The Commission is of the view that the admission of such a brilliant and resilient student should not be cancelled merely based on non-provision of EWS certificate on time. I have met the girl and I am struck by her confidence and courage. Even her family just wishes for their daughter to study and achieve her dreams. I was deeply disturbed that they were facing procedural issues in the admission of the girl and hence, we issued summons to the university. I am glad that she has been finally granted the admission. The Commission shall continue to assist her and her family in the future as well.”
