Jharkhand Weather Update: For the next three days, Ranchi residents and everyone else in Jharkhand will have to put up with rising temperatures and increasing discomfort, the Ranchi office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Friday.
Cyclonic Relief on the Horizon
From Sunday evening, when a low pressure system is projected to develop into a cyclonic circulation and move towards the coast of Odisha, Ranchi may see a little relief from the rising temperatures. Even so, it is doubtful that the state’s southern, central, and adjacent regions would get 65 mm or more of heavy to very heavy rainfall; instead, these regions are more likely to have isolated pockets of mild to moderate precipitation.
Unusual Rise in Temperatures and Upcoming Relief
Abhishek Anand, scientist at IMD Ranchi, told TOI: “Day and night-time temperatures are hovering above normal by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. This is due to the weakening of the southwest monsoon currents over Jharkhand. However, the mercury is expected to fall from Sunday afternoon. Even though the system over Bay of Bengal will not enter Jharkhand, it will have considerable effect in the state and cause light to moderate rain between September 4 and 6.” Jharkhand remained primarily dry during the previous 24 hours, according to IMD data released on Friday, with Jamtara receiving 31.4 mm of rain. On Thursday, the temperature in the Bokaro Thermal zone increased by more than 6 °C during the day, reaching 36.5 °C. While Jamshedpur recorded 36.3 °C (+3.9), Ranchi recorded 33 °C (+3.2). Daltonganj saw an increase of 2.7°C to 34.8°C, while Chaibasa posted a climb of 4.6 notches to 36.2°C. Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro Thermal, and Chaibasa all saw an increase in low temperatures of between 2.2 and 2.5°C.
Weaker Monsoon Currents Impact Jharkhand
The discrepancy between expected and actual rainfall was additionally widened by the weaker monsoon currents. The state received 504.1 mm of rain up until Friday, which was 38% less than the average cumulative rainfall of 807.1 mm.
