The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has instructed owners of dairy farms and gaushalas to obtain its approval for activities and has told them to adopt appropriate measures and ensure compliance with amended environmental norms or face fines.
This occurs since the majority of gaushalas and dairies continue to pour waste materials like manure and sewage down drains, polluting the water.
In accordance with National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives, the PPCB has requested that owners of dairy farms and gaushalas comply with the updated environmental management rules and obtain permission before establishing a unit.
As part of the consent, farmers and dairies agreed to stop depositing cow dung and to treat wastewater before releasing it into sewers.
Only if the units regularly gather excrement from the sheds would the PPCB approve the project.
“At present, the majority of dairies are flouting norms and polluting both air and water. This has to stop or environmental compensation will be levied against defaulters as per NGT orders. At present, most farms are operating without following any norms,” said a top PPCB official.
According to sources, the new orders was issued in response to issues with dung and wastewater outflow, particularly during the recent flooding in Punjab.
“Many dairy farms and gaushalas throw dung along with wastewater into drains, leading to clogging. This ultimately reaches rivers and creates water pollution. The dung produces many gases and compounds which are emitted into the atmosphere,” said PPCB Chairman Adarsh Pal Vig.
