CPL 2023: In Thursday’s Caribbean Premier League match between the Trinbago Knight Riders and the Barbados Royals, the West Indian cricket legend Kieron Pollard faced an uncommon dismissal. The Trinbago Knight Riders currently occupy the second spot in the points table, boasting four victories in seven matches, whereas the Barbados Royals are positioned fourth, having secured three wins in eight games.
Unusual dismissal sparks arguement
In the Queen’s Park Oval, it was Royals’ captain Rovman Powell who won the toss and made the decision to invite Kieron Pollard‘s Trinbago Knight Riders to bat first. This choice raised some eyebrows as TKR’s batsmen managed to accumulate a substantial total of 208 runs in their initial inning. The noteworthy incident took place during the 10th over of the innings.
While Rahkeem Cornwall was bowling to Nicholas Pooran and Kieron Pollard, TKR had 78 runs on the board with a loss of two wickets. Cornwall delivered a length ball aimed at the leg stump, which Pollard skillfully guided towards short fine leg. Kyle Mayers, the fielder, swiftly collected the ball, but Pollard and Pooran found themselves caught in a significant mix-up. Both batsmen attempted a single run, a decision that appeared challenging right from the start, given Mayers’ fielding prowess.
Pollard made a sudden decision to abort the run, retracing his steps to return to the striker’s end, but it proved too late because Pooran had already reached that end. Mayers swiftly threw the ball to Cornwall, who effortlessly removed the bails. This led to a brief exchange between the two batsmen, as they discussed whose call it had been, but they quickly resolved the matter amicably, sharing a fist bump. Initially, there was some confusion, and Pooran, who was coming from the other end, began walking back to the dressing room, hinting at the possibility of his dismissal.

Upon reviewing the replays, the TV umpires determined that it was indeed Nicholas Pooran who had reached the crease before Kieron Pollard. Consequently, Pooran survived, and Trinbago Knight Riders’ captain, Pollard, was declared out. As it turned out, this twist of fate proved to be a stroke of luck, as Pooran proceeded to score an exceptional unbeaten century. Pooran concluded his innings with a remarkable score of 102 from 53 balls, taking his team’s total to 208 runs.
