Ishan Kishan: India secured a spot in the Asia Cup 2023 finals with a 41-run victory over Sri Lanka in their second Super Four round encounter. In a highly gripping match with a low total, the Indian team had a strong beginning but faced a late collapse, ultimately posting a modest score of 213 runs while batting first. However, another amusing incident occurred during the inning when Ishan Kishan allegedly obstructed the field.
Did Ishan Kishan obstruct the field?
In the video, fielder Sadeera Samarawickrama attempted a throw to the wicketkeeper’s end during the 25th over. However, the ball ended up heading towards Ishan Kishan, who caught it to prevent any potential injury and returned it to the bowler. Sadeera promptly apologized for the throw, and even Sri Lanka’s captain, Dasun Shanaka, expressed regret for the wayward delivery.
Nevertheless, some fans believed it constituted an obstruction of the field, suggesting that the Sri Lankan players should have lodged an appeal against Ishan Kishan’s actions. However, even if Dasun Shanaka had appealed to the umpire, Kishan would likely have been declared safe. According to the MCC’s Laws of Cricket, specifically Law 37.2, a batsman cannot be dismissed for obstructing the field if the obstruction was accidental, made to prevent injury, or made within the bounds of lawfully defending one’s wicket.
