Joe Biden: On Thursday, President Joe Biden conveyed a steadfast commitment to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, assuring him that the United States will continue to provide robust support for Ukraine’s efforts to defend against Russian invaders. This commitment remains firm, despite resistance from certain Republican lawmakers who oppose the allocation of additional billions in aid.
Joe Biden affirms his stand on Russia-Ukraine war
Biden and Zelenskyy convened a war council in the White House East Room, marking one of the many public appearances by the Ukrainian leader aimed at strengthening U.S. backing for a conflict that commenced in February 2022 and shows no signs of conclusion. Biden said, “Mr. President, we’re with you, we’re staying with you.”
Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to Biden for the newly allocated $325 million military aid package, which includes weaponry and air defenses. He mentioned that this aid package aligns perfectly with the current requirements of Ukrainian soldiers.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy disclosed that he and Biden had reached an agreement on specific measures to enhance grain exports from Ukraine, addressing challenges arising from a Russian blockade and tensions with neighboring Poland. However, he did not provide details regarding these measures.
More financial aid for Ukraine?
Meanwhile, Biden’s request for an additional $24 million in funding for Ukraine to support its defense and humanitarian needs until the end of the year faces obstacles due to a budget dispute led by Republican hardliners in the House of Representatives. When asked how to overcome this opposition, Biden emphasized that the only path forward is approval by the U.S. Congress.
