Assembly Election: On Monday, October 8, 2023, the Election Commission of India (ECI) will release the calendar for the next assembly elections in Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana. According to news source PTI, the election panel has scheduled a press conference for today at 12 PM to reveal the dates for voting, the number of phases, and the deadlines for submitting and withdrawing nominations.
The Assembly Elections Looming in Late 2023 and Early 2024
Between December 2023 and January 2024, the tenure of the legislative assemblies of these five states are set to end. Six to eight weeks before the parliamentary assembly’s term ends, the ECI usually makes the election calendar public. All of the major political parties, including the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the main opposition Congress, and the regional parties, will be put to the test in the 2018 assembly elections.
A Glimpse of Parties in Control in Five States
In two of the five states—Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh—the Congress is in charge, while the BJP is in charge of Madhya Pradesh. In Telangana, the KCR-led Bharat Rashtra Samiti is in charge, and in Mizoram, the Mizo National Front (MNF) is in charge. The election is anticipated to take place between the second week of November and the first week of December, according to EC insiders who spoke to India Today earlier. Like the previous election in 2018, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, and Telangana may vote in a single phase.
Possible Differences in Election Dates Across States
Similar to what happened in 2018, polling in Chhattisgarh is anticipated to take place in two phases. There is a chance that the voting dates will vary among the five states. Between October 10 and October 15, the sources stated, the five states would conduct a joint vote count.
