Madhya Pradesh Assembly Election 2023: On October 15, the Congress party unveiled its first list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana. In Madhya Pradesh, the party has announced 144 candidates for the elections.
Former Chief Minister and PCC chief Kamal Nath is among the prominent figures fielded by the party. He will contest from his Chhindwara Assembly constituency. Kamal Nath is leading the Congress’ campaign in the state and is a highly visible figure on the ground. Notably, he didn’t contest the Assembly polls in 2018 but was sworn in as the Chief Minister after the Congress returned to power in the state after 15 years, with support from independent legislators, BSP MLAs, and an SP MLA. Later, he won a by-election from his pocket-borough Chhindwara Lok Sabha constituency’s Chhindwara Assembly segment.
The party has also nominated Jaivardhan Singh, the son of former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh, to run for the Raghogarh seat. Jaivardhan Singh served as a Minister in the last Kamal Nath government.
Other prominent Congress leaders in the candidate list include Jitu Patwari, former Minister of Higher Education in Madhya Pradesh, Vijayalakshmi Sadho, a Member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, and Lakshman Singh, also a Member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. The announcement marks a significant step for the Congress as it gears up for the upcoming Assembly elections in these states.
