Narayan Murthy: Prominent tech entrepreneur, NR Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, has ignited a debate by suggesting that India’s youth should commit to working a minimum of 70 hours a week to boost the nation’s work culture and improve competitiveness on a global scale.
Stressing the Need for Enhanced Productivity
Murthy’s recent remarks during an episode of 3one4 Capital’s podcast ‘The Record’ have once again raised the issue of productivity in India. He cited the necessity of transforming India’s work productivity to enable the country to catch up with economies that have progressed significantly in recent decades.
A Persistent Call for Extended Work Hours
This isn’t the first time Murthy has called for extended work hours to address economic challenges. In a 2020 interview, he argued that India needed to overcome economic setbacks caused by the COVID-19 lockdown. At that time, he recommended a work schedule of ten hours a day, six days a week, for the next two to three years. The idea was to fast-track economic growth.
Murthy stressed that Indians must adapt to living with the coronavirus, take precautions, and invest more hours to revive the economy. He also emphasized the significance of dedication and enhanced productivity among the youth, stating that they could significantly contribute to the nation’s development.
In response to Murthy’s recent comments, Bhavish Aggarwal, the CEO of Ola Electric, supported the idea. He highlighted that the present era demands a high level of dedication and a collective commitment to building a stronger India within a single generation, akin to the progress made by other nations over many generations.
