Gautam Gambhir: It’s Gautam Gambhir‘s homecoming. On Wednesday, November 21, the former India opener resigned from his position as coach of the Lucknow Super Giants and joined the Kolkata Knight Riders in advance of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL). In addition to joining the two-time champions as a mentor, Gambhir will collaborate closely with head coach Chandrakant Pandit. Gambhir led KKR to two titles in 2012 and 2014.
Gambhir’s Emotional Farewell
After resigning as captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, Gautam Gambhir wrote a heartfelt message on social media. Gambhir has been associated with LSG since the KL Rahul-led team’s founding in 2022. Working with head coach Andy Flower, who resigned earlier in the season, Gambhir was a crucial part of the Lucknow Super Giants organisation because he maintained control over the proceedings. For the upcoming season, Lucknow brought in Justin Langer, the coach of Australia that won the T20 World Cup.
Impeccable Journey Reflections
“As I announce the end of my impeccable journey with Lucknow Super Giants, I am filled with love and immense gratitude towards all the players, coaches, support staff and every individual who has made this journey memorable,” Gambhir said in a parting statement. “I would like to thank Dr. Sanjiv Goenka for his inspiring leadership while creating this remarkable franchise and for his tremendous support to all my endeavours. I’m sure that the team will do wonders in the future and will make every LSG fan proud. All the very best LSG brigade!”
Emotional Return to Kolkata Knight Riders
Gambhir will return to the Kolkata Knight Riders, the team he led to prominence, with mixed emotions. After KKR, which is co-owned by Shah Rukh Khan, struggled in the first three years of the IPL, Gambhir was an inspirational leader who guided the team to two titles. “Gautam Gambhir will return to KKR as “Mentor” and join hands with head coach Chandrakant Pandit,” KKR said in a release.
Historic Stint with KKR (2011-2017)
Gambhir had a truly historic relationship with KKR from 2011 to 2017. The team also said that during this time it qualified for the playoffs five times, won the championship twice, and advanced to the Champions League T20 finals in 2014. After leaving KKR to play for the Delhi Capitals, Gambhir became a mentor at LSG.
