UP News: A viral video on Friday showed a Uttar Pradesh minister, Yogendra Upadhyay, posing with a cheque for Captain Shubham Gupta’s family in Agra. In the video, Captain Gupta’s mother is heard pleading to stop turning their grief into a spectacle.
The minister attempted to hand over the cheque, but the officer’s mother resisted, stating she didn’t want anything. The incident led to Opposition criticism of the BJP for engaging in a “photo-op” after Captain Gupta was killed in a Jammu and Kashmir encounter. The video was widely shared by various Opposition parties on social media. “Vultures,” tweeted the Congress.
MP Priyanka Chaturvedi from Uddhav Thackeray’s party slammed it as “heartless”, saying “The mother is pleading while inconsolable, yet the minister continues with his photo op. What shamelessness is this? We won’t even allow the martyr’s family to grieve in peace minus the cameras”.
MP Raghav Chadha from AAP said, “The B in BJP should stand for Besharm and P for Publicity”.
“Captain Shubham Gupta made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty during an encounter in the Rajouri sector. His mother is grieving and eagerly awaiting her son’s mortal remains. In the midst of her inconsolable sorrow, UP government’s BJP Minister Yogendra Upadhyay shamelessly persists on having a photograph taken for his PR – this, despite the mother’s plea to refrain from turning her grief into a spectacle. Shame,” he tweeted.
