In the latest update, Delhi schools are set to undergo a shortened winter vacation lasting just six days, from January 1 to January 6, 2024. This adjustment in the winter break duration comes as a strategic measure to bridge educational gaps and ensure the timely completion of the school syllabus. The decision follows the recent closure of Delhi schools in November due to severe pollution, prompting authorities to recalibrate the academic calendar.
Context: Early Winter Break and Its Impact on Scheduled Vacations
Initially scheduled for January 1 to January 15, 2024, the winter vacation plan was altered after schools in Delhi closed from November 9 to 18, 2023, termed as an ‘early winter break’ owing to deteriorating air quality in Delhi-NCR. The closure was deemed necessary to safeguard students from the adverse effects of severe pollution.
Official Circular from Delhi Government’s Directorate of Education
The Directorate of Education for the Delhi Government issued a circular formalizing the adjusted winter vacation schedule. The circular explains, “The Winter Vacation for the Academic Session 2023-24 was earlier scheduled to be observed from 01.01.2024 (Monday) to 15.01.2024 (Monday). However, in order to ensure that our students are not adversely affected due to the poor air quality in Delhi, a portion of Winter Vacation was observed from 09.11.2023 to 18.11.2023.”
Communication Strategy for Stakeholders
The circular further directs all Heads of Schools in Delhi to disseminate this information among stakeholders, including teaching and non-teaching staff, students, and parents. This dissemination is to be carried out through various means, such as School Management Committee (SMC) members, mass SMS facilities, phone calls, and other suitable communication channels.
This adjustment aims to strike a balance between safeguarding students’ health and ensuring that educational objectives are met in a timely manner.
