Punjab News: In a commendable achievement, four young boys from rural backgrounds in Punjab have successfully qualified for the esteemed National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. The aspiring cadets hail from the Nishan-e-Sikhi Institute for Science and Training (NSIST) in Khadur Sahib, Tarn Taran, Punjab.
Dreams Realized for Five Students
Out of the 15 students who cleared the NDA written exam in September 2023 from NSIST, five have realized their dreams of joining the prestigious academy. NSIST operates under the patronage of Baba Sewa Singh Ji Kar Sewa, a Padma Shri awardee, and is inspired by Lieutenant General Harbakhsh Singh, a hero of the 1965 war. The institute aims to produce Army officers from the border region, specifically Sikh students with unshorn hair.
Profiles of Achieving Cadets
- Cadet Sahijpreet Singh: Hailing from Shaheed village in Tarn Taran, Sahijpreet Singh is the son of a small farmer. Expressing his interest in the armed forces, he opted for the Army despite no previous family connections in the military.
- Cadet Balroop Singh: From Sofian village in Amritsar, Balroop Singh’s father is a farmer, and his mother is a homemaker. Always aspiring to join the NDA, he credits NSIST for providing the necessary training and instilling hard work values.
- Cadet Dharwinder Singh: Coming from Hariayu village in Sangrur, Dharwinder Singh’s father is a junior engineer in Punjab State Power Corporation Limited. Grateful to NSIST, he acknowledges the institute for preparing him for the NDA.
- Cadet Jatinjot Singh: A resident of Kahnuwal village in Gurdaspur, Jatinjot Singh’s parents are teachers, and his grandfather retired as a subedar from the Army.
Significant Achievements of NSIST
Maj Gen Balwinder Singh, VSM (retd), Director of NSIST (NDA Wing), highlighted that this success brings the total count to 24 students selected in the NDA from NSIST. Additionally, 90 students from the institute have been selected in the Merchant Navy, showcasing the institute’s dedication to producing capable and accomplished individuals.
