Uttarakhand News: The Udham Singh Nagar district is witnessing a worrisome trend in the agricultural landscape, particularly in the realm of wheat cultivation. This year has seen a significant decrease of approximately 3,000 hectares in the area dedicated to wheat farming compared to the previous year.
The impact of this decline is felt across the Terai region of Uttarakhand, renowned as the “rice bowl” of the state, leading to fluctuations in wheat production.
Farmers’ Struggles and Contributing Factors:
Farmers in the region attribute the reduction in cultivation area to the rising costs and diminishing profits in agriculture. The surge in prices of fertilizers, seeds, and medicines has placed a financial burden on farmers, resulting in reduced returns on their crops. This financial strain has led to an overall decline in profits derived from crop production.
Regional Statistics:
According to block-wise statistics provided by the agriculture department, there is a notable exception in Jaspur, where the wheat cultivation area has seen a significant increase from 12,570 hectares in 2022-23 to 16,650 hectares in 2023-24. However, this positive scenario is not replicated in other areas of the district.
As concerns mount over the economic viability of wheat cultivation, stakeholders and authorities are urged to address the challenges faced by farmers to ensure sustainable agriculture in the region.
