IPL 2024 CSK Vs GT: It was a punch in the gut for Shubman Gill when he was left out of the Indian squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 squad. A player of his calibre would have surely been hurt by this decision.
He had a brilliant IPL 2023 and scored almost 900 runs but has been underwhelming in this season so far. There is no doubt that the external pressure of captaincy has affected his performance somehow.
But with his team in dire need of a miracle, Gill decided to take matters into his own hands. Not only did he maintain a brilliant strike rate, but also played a sensational knock to shatter Chennai’s bowling lineup completely.
Sensational Knock
Gill looked on a mission from the first ball which he drove for a beautiful boundary. He did not stop and kept the scoreboard going even when Sai Sudarshan was struggling from the other side.
Gill completed his century in just 50 deliveries with a strike rate of 200. He hit 9 boundaries and 6 sixes to reach that milestone. His celebration showcased how frustrated and angry he was over recent circumstances.
This inning is a statement to all the critics who stated that Gill is not suitable for the modern T20 game. It might be a little late but if he becomes consistent in the later stages of IPL 2024, he might get in that 15-man squad for the World Cup.
IPL 2024 CSK Vs GT: Record Partnership
This is the first time CSK have conceded an opening stand of 150 runs in IPL. Previous highest was 144 by Rahane & Watson for RR in 2015, also at Ahmedabad. This is also the highest partnership in IPL by an Indian pair and the 4th highest in total.
Both of them scored 210 runs together before Sudarshan was struck out by Tushar Deshpande. Previous highest was 183 by KL Rahul & Mayank Agarwal (PBKS) against Rajasthan Royals in 2020. This is also the first time that both openers reached the 100 run mark.
