Significance of Buddha Purnima
Born in Lumbini, modern-day Nepal, in around 563 BC, Prince Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, and was thereafter named Buddha. Having grown up in the kingdom of Kapilavastu, he set out on a life-changing path that resulted in nirvana, or freedom from the cycle of birth and reincarnation. Buddha is regarded as the ninth avatar of Vishnu and a symbol of rebirth in Hinduism.
On Buddha Purnima, people go to temples, practise meditation, recite Buddhist texts publicly and give food and alms to monks. Offerings to the moon and taking baths in sacred rivers are among the rites and benevolent deeds performed by devotees. The life and teachings of the “Enlightened One,” who broke free from the cycle of reincarnation and transcended karma, are honoured on this day.
