Lok Sabha Election 2024: In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed to secure only three seats, all from Punjab, despite contesting 22 seats across India. This marks the third consecutive time that Punjab has exclusively voted for AAP in the national elections.
The three successful AAP candidates from Punjab are cabinet minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, who is leading with a landslide margin of over 1 lakh votes; AAP chief spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang, leading from the Anandpur Sahib seat; and Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal, leading in the Hoshiarpur Lok Sabha seat. While these wins ensure that AAP holds onto these three seats, it falls short of the ambitious ‘Mission 13-0’ launched by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who had aimed for a clean sweep of all 13 seats in the state. Mann had also decided against forming an alliance with Congress, despite AAP being part of the INDIA alliance at the national level.
Intensive Campaigning by Bhagwant Mann
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had campaigned vigorously, addressing at least 122 rallies and road shows in just 25 days. On election day, Mann expressed confidence in his campaign efforts, stating, “I did not leave any constituency and got a positive response from people everywhere. During the election campaign, I asked for votes from the people on the basis of my two-year work.”
Despite Mann’s extensive campaigning and the positive feedback he reported, AAP’s overall performance outside Punjab remains a point of concern for the party. The results highlight the party’s stronghold in Punjab while underscoring the challenges it faces in expanding its influence nationally.
