So far 26 people have died and dozens are missing due to flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Kerala. Amidst this crisis in Kerala, the central government has expressed confidence of providing all possible help to the state government. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday assured all possible help for the needy people in Kerala. Amit Shah said on Twitter that the Center is closely monitoring the situation. It is being told that the death toll in Kerala floods may increase further.
Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted, “We are continuously monitoring the situation in some parts of Kerala in view of heavy rains and floods. The central government will do everything possible to help the needy people. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have already been dispatched to assist in the rescue operations. Praying for everyone’s safety.”
Meanwhile, there was a slight reduction in rainfall in central Kerala on Sunday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a bulletin that there is a possibility of light to moderate rain at many places in the state during the next 24 hours. The Meteorological Department further predicted that Kerala would receive isolated rainfall during this period.
Heavy rains lashed the south and central parts of Kerala on Saturday. Due to this, at least 18 people have died due to flash floods and landslides at many places, while more than a dozen people are missing. In view of the dire situation due to rain, the army has descended for relief and rescue work. Many people have been injured, while many have been displaced due to rain-related incidents in this southern state of the country. Most of the state’s dams have been filled to their full capacity and landslides have cut off many small towns and villages in the mountains from the rest of the world.
In the hilly areas of Kottayam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts, a similar situation has arisen during the devastating floods of 2018 and 2019. According to the latest information given by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a red alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur districts. Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts are worst affected by the rains, which have been raining since Friday night.
