Noida News: Afghanistan and Bangladesh have been very impressive in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. It just shows that if teams like Afghanistan get enough games, they can compete on the world stage.
But during the current upheaval in Afghanistan which resulted in the Taliban taking over the country, it is hard for the cricket team to play matches in their own country. The takeover happened in 2017 and since then Afghans have been hosting matches in the UAE.
But it looks like BCCI and Afghanistan Cricket have reached a new agreement. The new agreement allows the Afghans to host a white ball series against Bangladesh in Greater Noida.
Noida News: Homecoming?
BCCI has allowed Afghanistan to use Shahid Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida as their home stadium against Bangladesh. The tentative schedule puts this series right after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in that July-August period.
This will not be the first time that Afghans will play their matches in this stadium. In 2017, they played the venue’s inaugural ODI against Ireland. This is also not the first time that BCCI and ACB have reached an agreement.
Back in 2015, the two boards signed a memorandum of understanding to use this Sports Complex in Noida. Since then, Afghanistan has played their ‘home’ matches in Dehradun, the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, and Greater Noida.
A Good Series
While the exact schedule has not been released, it will be a great series. Considering the rise and current performance of Afghanistan, they can easily win against Bangladesh and improve their standings.
The series will consist of 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is, between July 25 to August 6. The Bangladesh team will arrive in Greater Noida on July 22, for a couple of days of training.
