Sam Pitroda: Sam Pitroda has been reappointed as the chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC), according to an All India Congress Committee (AICC) release issued today. The decision, effective immediately, was made by the Congress President.
Resignation Amid Controversy
Mr. Pitroda had resigned from the position in May following controversies surrounding his remarks about the appearance of Indians. In an interview with The Statesman, he had commented on India’s diversity, saying, “We have survived 75 years in a very happy environment where people could live together, leaving aside a few fights here and there. We could hold a country together as diverse as India, where people in the East look like Chinese, people in the West look like Arabs, people in the North look like whites, and maybe people in the South look like Africans.” These remarks sparked controversy, leading the Congress party to distance itself from Mr. Pitroda’s statements.
Congress Party’s Response
Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh announced Mr. Pitroda’s resignation through a post on X, stating, “Sam Pitroda has decided to step down as Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress of his own accord. The Congress President has accepted his decision.”
Reappointment and Future Role
Despite the controversy, Mr. Pitroda’s reappointment signifies the party’s confidence in his leadership. As the chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, Mr. Pitroda will continue to oversee the party’s activities and initiatives among the Indian diaspora. His leadership is expected to strengthen the party’s global outreach and engagement with overseas Indians.
