During the month of Sawan, there will be traffic restrictions on National Highway 58 (NH 58) and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) due to the upcoming Kanwar Yatra. The purpose of these steps is to guarantee a seamless pilgrimage experience for the Kanwariyas who are travelling from Delhi to Haridwar. These traffic restrictions will be implemented from July 22 to August 4.
Traffic Restrictions for Kanwar Yatra
The additional director general of police (ADG) for the Meerut zone, Dhruv Kant Thakur, held a meeting on Thursday to discuss the traffic plan for the Kanwar Yatra. The meeting included SPs and officials from 14 districts in western UP, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Delhi. It was decided that heavy vehicles would be banned on NH 58 starting July 22.
Speaking about the plan, the ADG mentioned that heavy vehicles will not be allowed on NH 58 and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway from July 22. From July 25, only light and medium light vehicles will be permitted to travel on the left side of NH 58 when heading from Delhi to Haridwar. The ADG noted that with the festival of Shivratri on August 2 and the expected increase in pilgrims in the last week of July, only light and medium light vehicles will be allowed between Haridwar and Meerut on NH 58. From July 29 to August 4, all types of vehicles will be prohibited on NH 58 and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
Route Diversion Plans and Communication
Officials in the respective districts have been instructed to create route diversion plans to facilitate the safe movement of pilgrims. Additionally, a WhatsApp group comprising officials from the 14 districts will be established to monitor the high influx of Kanwariyas during the Yatra. This group will help ensure timely updates and adequate arrangements across districts.
Security Arrangements for Pilgrims
The ADG assured that comprehensive security measures would be put in place to ensure the safety of Kanwariyas during their journey. A review meeting, chaired by the state Chief Secretary and DGP, is scheduled for July 6 in Meerut to evaluate the preparations for the Yatra.
An Anticipated Influx of Devotees
Several lakhs of devotees are expected to participate in the Kanwar Yatra, collecting holy water from Haridwar and other locations in Uttarakhand. These pilgrims will walk to their destinations, concluding their journey by offering Gangajal at Lord Shiva temples on Shivaratri, August 2.
