In an exciting development, India’s ODI team for the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka, which begins on July 27, has picked Riyan Parag and Harshit Rana. Rohit Sharma will lead the ODI team again, while Shubman Gill will take over as his deputy. The teams were revealed on Thursday by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Major Changes in Team India Squad
Sanju Samson, who scored a century against South Africa in December 2023, has been dropped from the 50-over format as a result of Parag’s inclusion. As for the T20I skipper, Suryakumar Yadav’s selection puts an end to rumours regarding Rohit Sharma’s retirement. The captain of the Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya, has been surprisingly left out of the T20I leadership role. Important players like Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammad Siraj have returned, while Shubman Gill will be the vice captain.
India vs Sri Lanka T20I Squad Details
From the Zimbabwe tour, several players, including Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhruv Jurel, and Sai Sudharsan, have missed out. However, Ravi Bishnoi, Riyan Parag, Khaleel Ahmed, Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sanju Samson have retained their places. Kuldeep Yadav, unfortunately, did not make it to the T20I squad.
India vs Sri Lanka ODI Squad Highlights
In the ODIs, Rohit Sharma is back alongside stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. The selectors have preferred the all-around capabilities of Parag over Samson, making it a tough call given Rahul and Pant are already in the squad as wicketkeeping options. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja have not been named in the ODI squad, while Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are included as spin-bowling all-rounders. Kuldeep Yadav and Bishnoi will be the main spinners, and with Jasprit Bumrah rested, Mohammad Siraj will lead the pace attack, supported by Khaleel Ahmed, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana. Avesh Khan is missing from both squads.
Coaching Update
This tour will also mark the beginning of Gautam Gambhir’s coaching stint with the team. He will be aiming for a strong start to his tenure.
