Paris Olympics 2024: After Vinesh Phogat was suspended from the Women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling final many athletes from around the world extended their support to her.
Even Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar supported Vinesh and termed this decision as something that did not make sense. But the Indian wrestler is so down over the situation as she has announced her retirement from the sport.
Her family and everyone in India are hoping that she will take back her retirement. Well, it looks like we are not the only one who wants Vinesh to take back her retirement. Paris Olympics 2024 gold medal winner Rei Higuchi also extended his support and shared an emotional story that will melt your heart.
‘Take A Good Rest’
Rei won the gold medal in 57kg men’s freestyle wrestling at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. He defeated Indian Aman Sehrawat in the semi-finals by technical superiority and was the best wrestler in his category.
He posted an emotional tweet supporting Vinesh and also recollected the time when he was found overweight by just 50 grams. Rei showed solidarity with Vinesh and asked her to take a rest and think about the world afterward.
Rei wrote “I understand your pain the best. Same 50g. Don’t worry about the voices around you. Life goes on. Rising from setbacks is the most beautiful thing. Take a good rest.”
Paris Olympics 2024: Worldwide Support
Many top athletes have come forward and supported Vinesh while condemning the decision of disqualification. Former American Olympic gold medallist Jordan Burroughs, Nigerian women’s wrestling coach Purity Akuh, and many more have come and supported the Indian wrestler.
Jordan Burroughs went to ‘X’ and wrote “Maybe stories like this will wake up the IOC. Wrestling needs MORE than six weight classes! After three tough matches against world-class opponents, no athlete should have to spend the night preparing for a Gold medal in this manner. Absolute desperation from the Indian team trying to get the last bit of weight off of Vinesh to qualify for today’s final.”.
