BCCI: Former Proteas pacer Morne Morkel has been appointed as the new bowling coach for team India. Several reports have claimed that the appointment has been finalized and BCCI will announce it officially very soon.
Several reports came forward during the Sri Lanka series citing the same. With half of the coaching staff already decided, the appointment of Morkel has completed the coaching staff for the next few years.
The Proteas pacer has an immaculate CV and brings a wealth of experience to this Indian side. With the Indian team having so many young pacers, a presence like Morkel will surely help them.
BCCI Appoints New Head Coach!
Morkel has played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is for South Africa taking a total of 544 across all three formats. He was part of one of the most lethal frontline pace attacks with Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander.
Morkel also has a little bit of experience in coaching at both franchise and national level. He was the bowling coach of the Pakistan national team for a short amount of time but decided to quit after a poor showing from the team in the ODI World Cup.
Morkel will take the charge of Indian bowling unit from September 1st. This makes the series against Bangladesh his first assignment which will start on September 19 in Chennai.
Old Friends Reunite
Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir and Morne Morkel go back a long way. They were part of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ squad together for three seasons. They were also part of the Lucknow Super Giants’ coaching staff.
Morkel will join Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, and fielding coach T Dilip as it looks like the support staff that went to Sri Lanka will be getting the post permanently.
