Sachin Tendulkar has the record for most runs in Test cricket. The record that he holds seemed impossible to break a few years ago. After all, 15,921 runs in a career is not something that everyone can achieve.
But as time passed, many players came forward and took the mantle after ‘Master Blaster.’ Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting also thinks that as he named the player who can break Sachin’s record.
Ponting himself is the second-highest run scorer in test cricket behind Sahcin. He has scored 13,378 runs in 168 tests with an impressive average of 51.85 runs per match.
‘Sachin Tendulkar Record’
According to Ponting, former England skipper Joe Root can break the record for most runs in test cricket held by the Indian opener. He thinks that Root has all the capabilities to do that.
He stated. “Root could potentially do that. He is 33 years old and 3000 runs behind. It depends on how many Test matches they play, but if they’re playing 10 to 14 Test matches a year and if you’re scoring 800 to 1,000 runs a year, then that sort of says he’s only three or four years off getting there.
If his hunger’s still there, then there’s every chance that he could do it. He is someone who, in the last couple of years, has gotten better and better. There’s always talk about batters reaching their prime in their early 30s, and he’s certainly done that. It’s been his conversion rates being the big thing.”
What A Milestone!
Ponting also focused on the fact that Root has improved so much over the past years. He stated “Four or five years ago, he was making a lot of 50s and struggling to go on and make hundreds, and he’s gone the other way recently. Almost every time he gets to 50 now, he goes on and makes a big hundred.”
Root recently became the seventh batsman in test cricket to reach 12,000 runs. He is close to beating Kumar Sangakkara and Alastair Cook in terms of runs scored. If everything goes well, he can very well enter the top 5 run scorers of all time.
