Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the United States on September 21, 2024, marked a significant milestone in India-US relations. This trip, which included attending the Quad summit in Wilmington, Delaware, was packed with crucial discussions and agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.
Bilateral Talks with President Biden
On the sidelines of the Quad Summit, PM Modi held important talks with US President Joe Biden at his residence. The leaders discussed several critical issues, including the landmark MQ-9B Predator drone deal and plans for a semiconductor plant in Kolkata. PM Modi highlighted that the India-US partnership today is a comprehensive global strategic alliance, driven by shared democratic values and strong people-to-people connections.
Defense Partnership and Drone Deal
A significant outcome of the talks was the decision to purchase thirty-one General Atomics MQ-9B drones. The $3.99 billion deal will significantly improve India’s capacity for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). The Air Force and Army will each receive eight Sky Guardian drones, while the Indian Navy will receive fifteen Sea Guardian drones. The MQ-9B is a powerful tool for the Indian armed forces because of its remarkable stealth qualities, which enable it to operate silently and at great altitudes.
Semiconductor Fabrication Plant
Another highlight of PM Modi’s US visit was the announcement of a new semiconductor fabrication plant in Kolkata. This initiative aims to bolster national security and advance technologies in telecommunications and green energy. The project will involve collaboration between Bharat Semi, 3rdiTech, and the US Space Force, marking a significant step in enhancing India’s capabilities in chip manufacturing. This plant is expected to create high-quality jobs and foster innovation in zero-emission technologies and AI.
Strengthening Clean Energy Initiatives
During their discussions, PM Modi and President Biden also focused on the US-India Roadmap to Build Safe and Secure Global Clean Energy Supply Chains. This initiative aims to accelerate the expansion of clean energy technologies and secure funding of $1 billion for projects in renewable energy, energy storage, and zero-emission vehicles. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to addressing global energy challenges and promoting sustainable development.
Regional Security and Global Issues
The leaders discussed a range of regional and global issues, such as the significance of maritime route freedom of passage and India’s impending co-leadership of Combined Task Force 150 in 2025. They also supported India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council and highlighted the need for reforms in international institutions to properly represent India’s perspective.
