Harmanpreet Kaur: Cricket comes with rather exciting events that not only impress fans but also make them furious. But, sometimes cricketers also lose their calm and express their anger in some situations. Yesterday, something similar happened. Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed bitterness as a dead ball saved New Zealand cricketer Amelia Kerr from getting run out. If you’re curious, what’s a dead ball? Here is what you need to know.
What’s the Dead Ball Rule?
The Dead Ball Rule is a rule of considering a ball ‘Dead’. This rule involves several incidents that give strength to it. Some of the dead-ball rules are, “When a boundary is scored.” “When the match is concluded.” “The ball is settled in the bowler or wicketkeeper’s hand.” “When a Batter is Dismissed.” “When the ball lodges in the clothing of batter or even umpire.” A ball is also considered dead “Whether played or not it becomes trapped between the bat and person of a batter or between items of his/her clothing or equipment.”
There are many cases that had happened previously in regard to the dead ball. In the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, Bangladesh lost a match against South Africa because of the LBW dead-ball rule.
In the case of Harmanpreet Kaur and Amelia Kerr, the ball was considered dead because of rule number 20.1.2. It says, “The ball shall be considered to be dead when it is clear to the bowler’s end umpire that the fielding side and both batters at the wicket have ceased to regard it as in play.”
Harmanpreet Kaur’s Furious Reaction
Yesterday, in the ICC women’s T20 World Cup, India vs New Zealand match, Harmanpreet Kaur expressed her anger. As Amelia Kerr hit the ball and took 1 run, the Bowler’s end umpire called it an ‘over’ as Deepti Sharma took her cap. But, without noticing, New Zealand batters ran for the second run. The ball was in the hands of captain Harmanpreet, she threw the ball to Wicket Keeper Richa and ran out Amelia. But, as the ball was considered dead, unintentionally umpires saved the NZ cricketer. This made Indians furious. However, it can not be said if the umpires were at fault because according to another dead ball rule, they can’t revoke their decision. Rule 20.6 says, ” Dead ball not to be revoked.”
