India Canada Relation: In a significant escalation of tensions, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats on Monday, citing evidence that they were part of an alleged Indian government “campaign of violence,” according to a Canadian government source quoted by Reuters. This move comes as relations between the two countries reach a new low, driven by accusations of interference and extremism support.
India Strongly Rejects Allegations, Recalls High Commissioner
In response, India summoned Canada’s Charge d’Affaires, Stewart Wheeler, to convey its strong rejection of the accusations. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) termed the allegations against its diplomats as “baseless” and a result of the Trudeau Government’s political agenda. The MEA further announced the decision to withdraw India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, along with other targeted diplomats and officials, citing concerns over their safety.
India Criticizes Trudeau Government for Supporting Extremism
India’s official statement condemned what it called “preposterous imputations” by the Canadian government, accusing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration of providing space for violent extremists and terrorists to operate freely in Canada. The Indian government stated that these elements have been allowed to “harass, threaten, and intimidate” Indian diplomats and community leaders in the country.
India emphasized that it reserves the right to take further steps in response to Canada’s actions, which it says are fueling extremism and violence against India. The MEA made it clear that the targeting of Indian diplomats was unacceptable and that the safety of its officials in Canada had been compromised.
Diplomatic Tensions Escalate
The current diplomatic standoff follows a period of growing unease between the two nations. India’s withdrawal of its High Commissioner underscores the gravity of the situation, with both sides accusing each other of undermining international norms and promoting hostility. As tensions rise, further diplomatic actions may be on the horizon.
