Delhi NCR Pollution : Delhi’s worsening air quality is driving a surge in respiratory health issues, according to Dr. Karan Madan, Associate Professor in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at AIIMS, Delhi. With pollution levels rising, AIIMS has observed a significant increase in respiratory complaints, particularly among patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Increase in OPD Admissions and Severe Cases
Dr. Madan reported a 15-20% rise in patients visiting the Outpatient Department (OPD) with worsening respiratory conditions. “Many asthma patients are experiencing severe exacerbations requiring admission,” he said, indicating the heavy toll pollution is taking on vulnerable populations. Patients have reported heightened symptoms, with some experiencing debilitating respiratory distress.
Expert Recommendations for Respiratory Patients
Amid the pollution crisis, Dr. Madan advised individuals with respiratory issues to minimize outdoor activity. He suggested that those looking to exercise should do so indoors to reduce exposure to pollutants. “Asthma patients should also ensure regular use of inhalers,” Dr. Madan emphasized, noting that managing existing conditions is critical during this period.
The Impact of Delhi’s Pollution on Public Health
As Delhi’s air quality continues to deteriorate, health professionals warn of the broader health implications for the general population. The surge in respiratory issues highlights the need for swift action and public awareness on minimizing exposure to polluted air.
