World Diabetes Day 2024 is here once again on November 14, themed “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps.” Celebrated in memory of Sir Frederick Banting, the aim of this day is to spread awareness and caution among diabetes patients. As seasons shift, diabetes patients are advised to stay vigilant, especially in areas with rising pollution levels, such as Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).
AQI Soars Beyond 500 in Delhi-NCR
In many parts of Delhi-NCR, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has surpassed the 500 mark, indicating severe pollution levels. According to AQICN.ORG, the AQI reached 686 in RK Puram at 10 a.m., a dangerously high level. Other areas reported similarly hazardous figures, such as PGDAV College, Srinivaspuri with an AQI of 531, Okhla with 578, Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium at 556, and Dwarka at 663. Mundka recorded an AQI of 449, while nearby regions of Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad reported AQI readings of 236, 230, and 240, respectively.
Impact of Pollution on Diabetes Patients
The rising pollution poses specific risks to diabetes patients, with health experts advising extra caution. Pollution may indirectly impact diabetes patients by triggering oxidative stress, potentially damaging pancreatic cells. This can, in turn, affect insulin production and secretion, raising health concerns for those with diabetes. Furthermore, increased pollution levels can alter gut microbiomes, possibly elevating the risk of diabetes. Prolonged exposure to air pollution can also lead to systemic inflammation, which may disrupt insulin function and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
History of World Diabetes Day
Observed every year on November 14, World Diabetes Day honors Sir Frederick Banting, whose dedicated research led to the discovery of insulin. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about diabetes and its impacts, emphasizing the importance of prevention and the need for public awareness.
