About Muharram
One of the most significant months in the Islamic calendar, Muharram marks the beginning of a new Islamic year. The Prophet Muhammad refers to this month as “the Sacred Month of Allah” and it is also referred to as Muharram-ul-Haram. Muharram, one of the four holy months designated by Allah, is particularly significant because it is the only month in which fighting is prohibited. Its name, Muharram, means “forbidden”. The practice of fasting on Ashura was known even before the rise of Islam. Some of them even break fast after evening, when they pay respect to Imam Hussein.
