Media player and video streaming server VLC media player has been banned in the country. According to reports, the VLC media player and website of the VideoLAN project have been banned by the government under the IT Act, 2000. The services of VLC media player and its website have been discontinued about two months ago. However, there has been no statement from the company on this. But, its website is down and the download link has also been blocked. On opening the website of VLC Media, a message of being banned under the I Act is visible.
Modi government strict on Chinese app
The Modi government had earlier banned about 350 Chinese apps in the country for security reasons. Recently, Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) was also suddenly removed from the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. After this, game players were upset due to the disappearance of BGMI’s store and Twitter was trending the BGMI hashtag. The BGMI ban was later confirmed. After PUBG was banned in 2020, BGMI was dropped as its substitute.
Now no one can access VLC in India. VLC Media Player is blocked on ACT Fibernet, Vodafone-Idea and all other major ISPs. The government also blocked hundreds of Chinese apps, including Tiktok, Camscanner and many more popular apps. The reason behind blocking the apps is that the government had received inputs that these platforms are sending user data to China. However, VLC media player is not supported by a Chinese company, but has been created by the Paris-based firm VideoLAN.
There has been no response from the company on the ban so far. A Twitter user tweeted saying that this platform has been banned two months ago. The user wrote that this platform has been closed in India under the IT Act, 2000 on the orders of the Ministry of Information Technology.
