In a big development, one of the Congress’s most senior leaders, Ghulam Nabi Azad on Friday quit the party. It has been reported that Azad has resigned from all positions including primary membership of Congress party.
This came days after the Azad resigned from the post of chairman of the campaign committee and from the political affairs committee of Jammu and Kashmir Congress hours after his appointment.
Despite serving eight terms in the Rajya Sabha, Azad, who retired from the Upper House in March, was not renominated to the Upper House by the Congress.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had turned emotional while bidding farewell to Ghulam Nabi Azad in the Rajya Sabha.

In a five page note to interim party president Sonia Gandhi, he listed out detailed reasons for leaving the party. The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir also attacked Rahul Gandhi in his letter for insulting senior leaders after he stepped down as the party president post 2019 elections on his own.
Azad is the head of the dissident G-23 and was ignored by the party for nomination to the Upper House.
Congress also questioned the time of Azad’s resignation saying, “Content of Ghulam Nabi Azad’s letter is not factual, timing is awful.” Acknowledging that Ghulam Nabi Azad was a senior party leader, Congress said that it was “saddening that he quit when the party fighting against inflation and polarisation.”
