Delhi: As per the instructions of the Delhi High Court, the Delhi government is about to formalise a policy regarding the release of overage vehicles that have been detained by the Transport Department. Read on to know more.
Delhi to soon finalise policy for release of impounded overage vehicles
In accordance with the Delhi High Court’s orders, the Delhi administration has almost finished drafting a policy for the release of impounded overage cars. In order to ensure that these cars are not deployed in the nation’s capital, the court ordered the municipal authorities to develop a regulation. In 2018, the Supreme Court of India prohibited the use of diesel and petrol automobiles that were more than ten and fifteen years old, respectively, in Delhi. The court further declared that any vehicle found to be in violation would be seized.

Vehicle owners would have to hire a lorry or carriage if they need to take an overage automobile for repairs under the new legislation, which would require them to notify the Transport Department. In addition, it would be necessary for people to promise not to park their cars in public areas or drive on public roads.
Between January and October of last year, around five million cars were deregistered, and over 15,000 of those were seized. The Delhi High Court had asked the municipal administration to create a policy for situations in which the owners guarantee that these cars won’t be driven in the nation’s capital.
Fines and NOC
According to an official, the policy aims to release seized vehicles by fining two-wheelers Rs. 5,000 and four-wheelers Rs. 10,000.
Enforcement teams confiscated these cars because they were driven on public highways and parked in public areas.
If people don’t want their cars scrapped, the government might provide them a window of six to twelve months to get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Transport Department and relocate their cars outside of Delhi.
