Honda hydrogen cells
This car’s fuel cell system was developed jointly with General Motors. The technology in the 2019 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell is twice as durable and costs only a third as much, claims Honda.
Additionally, the fuel cell vehicle based on the CR-V will support plug-in electric driving. Owners will be able to charge it at home as a result, potentially brushing aside concerns about the infrastructure for recharging with hydrogen that is currently somewhat underdeveloped.
Company’s plans for the future
Honda anticipates having a fuel cell that is twice as durable and costs half as much by the year 2030 as the system it developed with GM. The company asserts that the cost per unit may be comparable to that of a diesel engine.
Commercial cars with fuel cells are also a possibility. In Japan, Honda and Isuzu are developing a heavy-duty vehicle that will begin on-road trials by the first quarter of 2024.
Honda is also interested in using fuel cells in space. The technology is being developed in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. In order to electrolyze water and produce oxygen and hydrogen, solar energy will be used. From oxygen and hydrogen, the fuel cell could produce both water and power. This is referred to by the company as a “circulative renewable energy system.”
By the year 2050, Honda wants all of its goods and business operations to be carbon neutral. The business seeks to have no negative environmental effects.
