Icoma Tatamel hands-on: A transformable, multi purpose e bike that can take you places, all you must know

Icoma Tatamel hands-on: Exciting ideas and novel technology are developed at CES. Testing the boundaries of what is conceivable, not all of them actually make it to market. But every now and then, something comes along that is so purely original and endearing that you can’t help but root for it to succeed. The Icoma Tatamel e-bike, an electric motorbike that can be completely customised and collapses to the size of a suitcase, strikes me as one of the most representative items of that sentiment.

The company says its more than a bike

I had the chance to chat with the Icoma co-founders, who revealed that their area of expertise was making Japanese transformable toys. That information puts several aspects of this bike into perspective. The bike has a whimsical, flexible design similar to a transformer. The bike’s ability to perform a variety of tasks makes it more than just a bicycle, and I couldn’t help but smile as I watched the wheels and headlamp emerge from the little rectangle. It resembles an electronic multi-tool more than anything else.

To begin with, the Tatamel blurs the lines between many different sorts of electric cars when used as a personal mode of transportation. Ten-inch tyres, dual suspension, and dual breaks are on it. Its range of 30 kilometres and respectable top speed of 40 kilometres per hour put it in the middle between a moped and a scooter. And even while it is smaller than a conventional electric scooter, it weighs 110 lbs., which is a lot more. Unfortunately, the convenience of portability is eliminated by that weight. To its credit, though, it shrinks into itself to fit under a desk, making it considerably simpler to store than a folding scooter.

Icoma Tatamel hands-on: Features

The Tatamel bike also functions as a power source. Few micro-mobile electric vehicles I’ve seen can charge your phone or any approved device via USB-C, but I predict this trend to become quite widespread in the near future since, well, it simply makes sense. The Tatamel may be plugged into any power outlet and charges completely in less than three hours. The battery’s capacity can be increased from 12Ah to 29Ah, however doing so would add to the battery’s already hefty weight.

Given the weight, the Tatamel may as well be bigger in size to accommodate more

Additionally, the bike has some inside space when it’s folded down for items like a water bottle, but it’s too small to stow a helmet. This kind of compromise might be advantageous for countries with little storage capacity, like Japan, but I believe a larger model would be more appropriate for other areas of the world. Even said, a lot could change before the Icoma Tatamel is published because it is still in the development stage. For longer ranges and faster speeds, I want to see more battery and motor options. But the modular options show a promising future.
