Mahindra: Mahindra, a local manufacturer of UVs, intends to spend 100 billion rupees ($1.21 billion) to build an EV production facility close to Pune, Maharashtra, in the region’s west. Over the course of the following 7-8 years, the funds will be invested in the production facility.

What will the new Mahindra plant be used for?
This manufacturing facility will be used by Mahindra to produce their future line of Born Electric Vehicles (BEVs), which was unveiled in August 2022. Five new electric SUVs from Mahindra were on display: the XUV.e8, XUV.e9, BE.05, BE.07, and BE.09. While the BE series will first go on sale in 2025, XUV EVs will first enter our market starting in 2024. The base and battery modules for the new EVs will be the same, but their outputs will differ. At the production facility, Mahindra will assemble the electric vehicle based on the XUV 700.
In India, there are currently roughly 3 million cars sold annually, and EVs are only 1% of all vehicles sold. By 2030, the Indian government wants to increase the market share of EVs to 30%. The new production facility will enable Mahindra to produce EVs more quickly and to compete with Tata Motors, which holds a market share of more than 80% in India. For those who are unaware, Tata has acquired Ford’s manufacturing facility in Gujarat, a state in western India.
In order to finance between $250 million and $500 million for its new EV company, Mahindra Group is also in discussions with international investors. After receiving its initial funding from British International Investment, the new EV unit was valued at $9 billion in July.
Upcoming Mahindra’s EVs
In January 2023, Mahindra will introduce the new XUV400 EV. Bookings will actually start for the new model in the first half of January 2023. It has an electric motor located on the front axle that is powered by a 39.4kWh battery pack. The electric motor generates 310Nm of torque and 150bhp of power. It reaches from 0-100 in just 8.3 seconds and has a top speed of 150 kmph.
Mahindra will introduce the XUV.E8 electric SUV by December 2024 after the XUV400. This SUV has the same style as the XUV700 and is built on the INGLO platform, which is a Born Electric Platform. There will be an all-wheel-drive system and an 80kWh battery pack in the upcoming XUV.e8 electric SUV. It is stated to have a power output of between 230 and 350 horsepower. By April 2025, the business will also introduce the electric XUV.E9. It also gives a sneak peek at the company’s future XUV900 SUV Coupe. The battery pack and electric motors are probably shared with the electric XUV.e8.
From October 2025, Mahindra will begin rolling out its BE line of electric vehicles. The Mahindra BE.05 electric SUV, which will be positioned above the XUV400, will be the first model. By October 2026, the BE.07 electric SUV is expected to go on sale. The business hasn’t yet said when the BE.09 electric SUV will go on sale.
