Royal Enfield: Royal Enfield will introduce its first electric bike in India in 2025, according to Eicher Motors MD & CEO Siddartha Lal. According to him, “EV is very much at the core of Eicher Motors and Royal Enfield. Unless something dramatically changes, it will be within the Royal Enfield and Eicher Motors’ fold.”
Royal Enfield’s EV Plan
Lal emphasised that although it will take two years, preparations for the launch of the company’s first EV are already well underway.
Before eventually expanding into a new factor, which is planned to be built at Cheyyar, the legacy bikemaker is setting aside a capacity of approximately 1-1.5 lakh units for its EVs from its current manufacturing facility.
A specialised division of Eicher Motors has been established to provide a stronger emphasis on the EV sector. At least 100 engineers, led by CTO Umesh Krishnappa, have already joined the company.
Lal added, “We are around 2 years away before the product hits the market. We are working super hard on it. We are riding our prototypes; we still have time. We don’t want to give half-baked stuff in the market, our idea is to be totally disruptive. It is not about taking some competition head-on, we are working on a completely different paradigm on EVs. It takes time to put together something really fantastic.”
The corporation has committed more than Rs 1,000 crore in capital expenditures, with the development of electric vehicles set to receive the majority of the funds.
