Toyota Hilux MHEV: The Toyota mild-hybrid diesel engine, which will first be used in the Hilux, has finally received the first specifics. In the future, the Fortuner will receive the same engine as well. At the WRC Safari Rally 2023 in Kenya, Toyota recently tested a prototype Hilux GR-S’s hybrid drivetrain.
Toyota Hilux MHEV powertrain details
It is still unknown how much power and torque will be available, as well as how much fuel will be used and how much CO2 will be emitted. For comparison, the current Hilux double cab with turbo-diesel four-wheel drive produces 150kW of power at 3400 rpm and 500Nm of torque between 1600 and 2800 rpm. It also uses 8.4 litres of fuel every 100 kilometres and emits 220 grammes of carbon dioxide per km.
The 2.8-litre diesel engine that powers the Hilux and the Fortuner will receive 48V mild-hybrid technology and probably only be offered with a 6-speed automated gearbox. Compared to its equivalent without the mild-hybrid technology, this powertrain will be approximately 10% more fuel-efficient.
That average should drop to roughly 7.6L/100km with a projected 10% improvement in fuel economy.
