Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder: The Urban Cruiser HyRyder, Toyota’s latest SUV for the Indian market, will soon be available in a CNG version. In December 2022, the Toyota HyRyder CNG is scheduled to go on sale. The 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine will power the HyRyder CNG, Toyota’s first SUV to run on compressed natural gas. The SUV’s boot will house the CNG kit. All Toyota dealerships in India are now accepting reservations for the HyRyder CNG, and deliveries will start on the launch day. The HyRyder CNG will probably cost between Rs. 30,000 and 40,000 more than equivalent petrol-powered models, which start at Rs. 10.48 lakh. A CNG option will also be available for the HyRyder’s badge-engineered sibling, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.
Engine Details
Given that Maruti Suzuki is the biggest manufacturer of CNG vehicles in India, it makes sense that Toyota would use some of its technology. With a factory-installed CNG kit, the 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine used by the HyRyder CNG has the ability to run on both petrol and CNG. The engine has a petrol output of 102 bhp and 137 nm and is available with a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission or a five-speed manual. Both gearbox options will probably be available for the Toyota Hyryder CNG. Power and torque outputs while using CNG will be decreased to 87 Bhp and 121 Nm. Twin injectors (DualJet) on each cylinder and variable valve timing (Dual VVT) for both the intake and exhaust valves are two of the K15C engine’s key features.
A 1.5-litre K15C naturally aspirated petrol mild hybrid with 102 bhp-137 nm and a 1.5-litre TNGA petrol strong hybrid with a combined output of 114 bhp are the other two engine options available for the HyRyder. The powerful hybrid engine, which drives the front wheels, has the capacity to be driven as a full-electric vehicle for brief distances, whereas the K15C petrol has an all-wheel drive option with the 5-speed manual transmission on the top-end trim.
The Hyryder’s powerful hybrid drivetrain is only available with one transmission, a CVT automatic gearbox. The powerful hybrid powertrain’s outstanding fuel economy of over 28 Kmpl, which is unsurpassed even by diesel engines in the compact SUV segment, is its most notable feature. Both a 6-speed torque converter automatic and a 5-speed manual gearbox are available for the 1.5 K15C petrol engine.
A CNG variant was all it needed to complete the portfolio
Those who find the powerful hybrid to be too expensive but prefer the low operating costs that a CNG-powered car offers are the target market for HyRyder’s CNG alternative. Since city SUV consumers will be the primary target market for the HyRyder CNG, Toyota is most likely to provide a torque converter automatic option with the CNG model. Previously, only manual gears were offered for sale with CNG-powered vehicles. With the Brezza CNG, which offers both manual and automatic gearbox options, Maruti Suzuki has defied the norm. Notably, the engines and gearboxes on the Brezza CNG and HyRyder CNG are identical.
