Volkswagen Touareg facelift: Five years after its release, Volkswagen has given the third-generation Touareg a makeover. The updated Touareg, a sister vehicle to the Audi Q7 and the Porsche Cayenne, features exterior design improvements in addition to an interior redesign with new digital functionality for the Elegance and R-Line trims. Additionally, a third entry-level model will be offered in Germany.

What’s new in the exterior?

Among the changes made to the exterior of the updated VW SUV is a new-look front grille designed to emphasize the width of the Touareg. Elegantly-trimmed models get a chrome finish, while the R-Line is black. The air ducts in the lower part of the front bumper are also larger than before and receive an individual design according to the upholstery. It also gets redesigned headlights, and Volkswagen’s IQ Light HD matrix system – up to 19,216 micro-LEDs per unit – is optional.
At the rear, the 2024 model year Touareg gets a new light strip across the tailgate and a new look for the taillight graphics. It also has an illuminated logo – a first for a Volkswagen model sold in Europe – and HD headlights. There are also four new wheel models: Coventry and Braga, which are 19 and 20 inches, and Napoli and Leeds, which are both 21 inches.

The Innovision Cockpit, which was formerly an option for the updated Touareg, is now a standard feature. This features a 15-inch infotainment display and a 12-inch instrument cluster. More sophisticated HD map data with lane-level sat-nav and a new voice control system based on conversational instructions are brought via software and feature updates. Additionally, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless.

The switchgear in the centre console and the USB-C ports, which have been increased from a charging capability of 15W to 45W for quicker recharging of electronic devices, are the focus of other improvements. The door trims have also undergone subtle changes, and there is a new ambient lighting effect.

Know about the powertrain

Five drivetrains, all with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and a 4Motion all-wheel drive system, have been confirmed by Volkswagen for the next Touareg. Included are two 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6 engines with 227 and 282 horsepower as well as a 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged petrol engine with 335 horsepower.

Volkswagen has also upgraded its two plug-in hybrid powertrains, which combine a gearbox-mounted electric motor with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine to produce 375 horsepower in the Touareg eHybrid and 455 horsepower in the Touareg R eHybrid. The latter boasts a top speed of 250 kph and acceleration from 0 to 100 kph in 5.1 seconds. Volkswagen has not yet disclosed the ranges of either PHEV model’s electric-only versions, but both feature batteries with a 14.1kWh energy capacity.
