Ashok Leyland H2-ICE truck: Company showcases its futuristic vehicle range powered by electric & hydrogen options, what you must know

Ashok Leyland H2-ICE truck: Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Ashok Leyland unveiled India’s first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) powered heavy-duty truck, On Monday, February 7, 2023. PM Narendra Modi launched India’s first hydrogen-powered truck at India Energy Week in Bengaluru.

Over the past year, the Hinduja Group’s flagship company, Ashok Leyland, and Reliance Industries, India’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, have been working on H2-ICE technology. Since August 2022, the heavy-duty truck has been in testing.

Know about capacity and power

The Ashok Leyland H2-ICE truck range is powered by hydrogen, but the overall architecture is similar to that of a traditional diesel-based combustion engine. According to the official statement, the H2-ICE heavy-duty truck, with a loading capacity of 19-35 tonnes, aids in the rapid transition to cleaner energy at a relatively lower cost delta.

“By collaborating with RIL, we have demonstrated our technological leadership and commitment to the Clean Mobility Mission,” says Dr. N Saravanan, President and Chief Technology Officer at Ashok Leyland.

“Our goal is to make India’s alternate fuel segment self-sufficient and to be one of the flag bearers of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign,” he added.

Ashok Leyland H2-ICE truck: National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap

The H2-ICE technology appears to be promising for clean mobility; however, the cost is high due to the limited availability of hydrogen fuel. The central government is developing the National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap as well as promotional initiatives such as the National Hydrogen Energy Mission.
At the Auto Expo 2023 last month, Ashok Leyland displayed its futuristic vehicle range powered by electric and hydrogen options.
