Asus has unveiled new smartphones for gamers in its Republic of Gamers lineup – the ROG Phone 6 series. The series brings in two new options for gamers – the ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro – in India. The new ROG Phone 6 series is powered by the latest top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, touted to be much more power-efficient than last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. We got a chance to use the high-end ROG Phone 6 Pro for some time, and here’s our first impression.
ROG Phone 6 Pro has a bold and striking design
The ROG Phone 6 Pro continues the ROG line of Asus products’ tradition of daring design. Well, you would find ‘Dare To Play’ in bold and a ’06’ imprinted, indicating it is the 6th generation ROG Phone. The smartphone is not one of the most pocketable smartphones due to its size and weight of 239 grammes. Do you recall the back-mounted ROG Vision display? It now displays up to 60 additional visuals for various scenarios and is a little bit bigger and positioned differently. Although the camera module sticks out slightly, the smartphone does not sway significantly when placed flat. The only colour option for the ROG Phone 6 Pro is Storm White, and it looks fantastic.
ROG Phone 6 Pro offers a fast and bright display
The ROG Phone 6 Pro’s 6.78-inch AMOLED display has an extremely quick refresh rate of 165Hz and a 720Hz touch sampling rate. With HDR10+ certification, a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, and a peak brightness of 1200 nits, the display is vivid. Although the hefty top bezel may surprise some, it makes gaming simple because it prevents errant edges from being touched. Use a screen protector even though the front of the smartphone has Gorilla Glass Victus protection.
Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset inside the ROG Phone 6 Pro is made for gaming
Genshin Impact, Call of Duty: Mobile, and PUBG New State were some of the graphically demanding games we played during our limited time with the ROG Phone 6, and we hardly observed any stuttering or excessive heating during the gaming. With 18GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of internal storage, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset was capable of handling anything that was thrown at it, including demanding games and everyday duties. Having saying that, performance-wise, the ROG Phone 6 Pro is no slouch. Additionally, there is X-mode for enhanced performance, but due to the short amount of time we had, we were unable to test it out extensively.
We can either choose the ROG UI or the near-stock Zen UI
The ROG Phone 6 Pro comes pre-installed with Android 12 and offers users a choice between the bold ROG UI and the nearly stock Zen UI. Both UIs were fluid, and we saw no significant problems, but the ROG UI’s icons have an odd appearance. The ROG Phone 6 Pro will receive two Android updates from Asus, as well as two years of security patches. However, given Asus’ track record with upgrades, we worry that it would take the business a long time to offer these changes.
ROG Phone 6 Pro comes with the 50MP IMX766 primary camera
The 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor, which has a solid track record, is the major pillar camera of the 2020s and is included in Asus’ new ROG Phone 6 Pro. A 13MP ultrawide camera and a 5MP macro camera make up the other two cameras. Although it is encouraging to see Asus employing the new sensors almost two years after they were released, the lack of OIS is a touch disappointing. However, a person purchasing a phone for gaming might not place a high importance on the camera.
