Call drop issues: TRAI to make changes to address complaints, check out what’s in store

Call drops complaints

Call drop issues: The telecom regulator TRAI stated that it has received a lot of call drop complaints from users, necessitating a revision of existing quality of service (QoS) guidelines to monitor network performance at the district level, as well as bringing 4G-5G services within its purview.

Complaints increased after the development of 5G

It stated that subscriber complaints about call dropouts and other network-related difficulties have escalated, particularly since the deployment of 5G services. The authority noted that, based on a detailed analysis of quarterly QoS performance reports, there may be pockets or areas experiencing poor quality of service due to averaging effect while service providers meet overall QoS benchmark at the LSA level due to the long performance assessment period of a quarter over a large area like LSA.

Call drop issues: Monitor 5G QoS performance

As a result, in order to have a better understanding of the state of QoS, it proposes monthly QoS performance reporting at the State and UT levels, in addition to the LSA level. In current rules, the QoS standards and benchmarks for voice and data services are technology neutral. To monitor 5G QoS performance, the essential language for 5G services has also been changed in the rules.

Network availability is an important requirement

The availability of the network is a critical prerequisite for excellent QoS. As a result, it is recommended that performance against service provider network availability be reviewed at the state and university levels to guarantee that consumers receive uninterrupted services.
To simplify the regulatory framework for QoS, a single rule dealing with QoS requirements for all voice and data services, regardless of their access medium, i.e., for both landline and wireless services, is suggested. As a result, three rules are recommended to be combined into one.
