Layoffs in 2024: Have you ever wondered why these businesses fire their workers for no apparent reason? Is it true that employers fire workers for no apparent reason? Or is there a rationale for each layoff? If you have these questions in your mind then first of all you should know what really a layoff is. A layoff occurs when your job with the company is either terminated permanently or put on a temporary hiatus by the employer. Although there are many different reasons for layoffs, very few involve an employee’s fault. Instead, a layoff is primarily carried out as a result of circumstances related to the business or the employer. Layoffs can be either temporary, in which case the worker typically receives compensation until they are hired again, or permanent, in which case their employment with the company is terminated.
Here are the companies that announced layoffs in 2024
A layoff-tracking website reported that 1,187 tech companies let go of 2,62,595 people in total last year. 91 tech companies have let go of 24,564 workers so far in January. Tech giant Salesforce announced on Friday that it is cutting off 700 workers, adding to the growing number of companies that have announced job cuts in January. This comes after Alphabet and Amazon made similar declarations earlier in the month.

Do you thing firing and layoff is same?
The reason for ending an employee’s employment is the primary distinction between a layoff and a firing. A layoff is typically carried out for employer-related reasons and circumstances, such as cost-cutting measures, a lack of work, the move of the company’s headquarters, modifications to job requirements or positions, etc. Thus, it may be concluded that an employee’s fault is rarely a factor in a layoff. Conversely, an employee’s conduct at work, productivity, performance, misbehaviour, insubordination, and other related criteria are the primary reasons for termination. Thus, an employer or firm will typically fire an employee in response to that employee’s actions.
