Toyota Tacoma: The brand-new Tacoma pickup vehicle, which will be on sale in the North American market first, has been given full data and images by Toyota. The Hilux pickup, which is offered in India as well as all over the world, has a North American equivalent in the Tacoma.
New and upgraded design
The new Tacoma has towering front bumpers with fake side air vents, sweptback, square headlights with tiny LED DRLs, and a wide grille with a prominent Toyota logo in the middle. The Tacoma Sport and lower trims have more black trim on the nose, while the top trims have more chrome on the front, flanks, and alloy wheels. Boxy dimensions give it a butch appearance up front, while the C-shaped taillights and bumper design at the back also have a fresh appearance.
Toyota Tacoma: Engine and powertrain
The new Tacoma has four powertrain options, with entry-level versions featuring a 231-horsepower 2.4-liter gasoline engine paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Next is the same 2.4-liter 274 hp engine with a 6-speed shift-equal manual transmission. The automatic transmission of the more powerful 2.4-liter engine offers 282 horsepower. The top-of-the-line Tacoma has a 2.4-liter gasoline hybrid engine with a 1.9 kW battery and a 48-horsepower electric motor for a total power of 330 hp.
The Tacoma gets a standard RWD limited-slip differential on lower trims. All-wheel drive with an electronically controlled transmission (two gears) and a low gear is optional on mid-level versions, and the top-of-the-line Tacoma model with a hybrid powertrain gets full-time all-wheel drive and a central key as standard differential.
Availability in India
While the Tacoma won’t be coming to India, there is a chance that its hybrid powertrain, with a different power output, will end up in some markets, including India, for the Fortuner and Hilux of the next generation.
Given that diesel engines still make up a sizable portion of SUVs in India, Toyota will keep providing a diesel engine with the new Fortuner. To compensate for the burdensome body-on-frame architecture and strict emissions regulations, the company will need to provide diesel-hybrid engine options for the next SUV.
