Major General-level talks between the militaries of India and China are being held in two locations, Daulat Beg Oldie and Chushul, in South Africa from August 22 to 24 during the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, in an effort to end the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh.
Notably, PM Modi will go to Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 22 to 24, in order to attend the 15th BRICS Summit, at the invitation of South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa.
It’s also vital to keep in mind that despite 19 rounds of talks, there hasn’t been a significant development. Over 50,000 soldiers from both sides remain deployed in the Ladakh theatre despite four rounds of disengagement between the two sides in the Galwan Valley, Pangong Tso, Gogra (PP-17A), and Hot Springs (PP-15).
Trishul Division Commander Major General PK Mishra and Uniform Force Commander Major General Hariharan represented India in the talks between the Chinese and Indian sides at the two locations. The discussions are being held in response to the results of the 19th round of Corps Commander-level negotiations that took place between the two sides on August 13–14 at the border crossing in Chushul Moldo.
According to the sources, the main points of dispute between India and China in relation to the Ladakh theatre’s disengagement are the Chinese military’s position at the CNN junction and the decision to resume patrolling in the Depsang plains. They said that both parties are trying to find solutions to these problems.
More Corp-Commander-level talk expected
If the Major General-level talks are successful, more Corp-Commander-level talks are expected. The conclusions would then be put into writing.
The debates were ongoing and the concerns were nuancedly discussed up until the publishing of this report. Due to the border tensions, India and China have been in a standoff for the past three years, and ties at all levels have gotten worse. Over 50,000 soldiers from India and China have been stationed in the Eastern Ladakh area on the other side of the Line of Actual Control.
After protracted discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, conducted by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, only the 19th round of corps commander meetings were held, four months later.
