December 13, 2001 is the date when five terrorists in a white Ambassador car carried out the terrorist attack on the biggest temple of democracy, the Parliament House. Today is the 21st anniversary of the Parliament House attack. Even after 21 years, the memories of the terrorist attack on Parliament are fresh. A total of 9 people, including five Delhi Police personnel, a woman constable of CRPF and two guards of Parliament, were martyred in this attack. While all the five terrorists were also killed.
Actually, on the morning of 13 December 2001, the winter session was going on in the Parliament. Most of the MPs were present in the Parliament that day and there was uproar in both the Houses of the Parliament by the members over the coffin scam. Then at around 11.29 am, a white Ambassador car came speeding towards the Parliament House and broke through the barricade at the main entrance and entered inside. The sticker of the Ministry of Home Affairs was also installed on the white ambassador car.
Parliament premises echoed with the sound of gunfire for 45 minutes
The five Jaish terrorists riding in the white ambassador car started firing from AK-47. Hearing the sound of gunfire, the security forces present in the Parliament complex got ready. In a hurry, the security personnel immediately took charge and closed the entry gate of the Parliament. For about 45 minutes, the sound of gunfire was heard in the Parliament. All the terrorists were killed by the security forces in a face-to-face encounter. However, a total of 9 people including five Delhi Police personnel, a woman constable of CRPF and two guards of Parliament were martyred in this attack.
PM Atal Bihari had left for his residence at the time of the attack
When the terrorist attack was carried out on the Parliament. During that time most of the MPs were present in the house. While the proceedings of both the Houses of the Parliament had to be postponed due to the uproar. Due to which Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sonia Gandhi had left for their residence before the attack. However, the then Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani was in the Parliament House at the time of the attack.
It is notable that Afzal Guru hatched the conspiracy of this attack on the Parliament House. After which the Delhi Police arrested Afzal Guru, the main accused in the Parliament attack. During investigation, it was revealed that he had also taken terrorist training in Pakistan. In the year 2002, the Delhi High Court and in the year 2006, the Supreme Court had sentenced him to death. On the morning of 9 February 2013, Afzal Guru was hanged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
